feat(clickhouse): support DataLake catalog source mappings - #6153
SQLMesh sources use catalog.schema.table names, but ClickHouse DataLakeCatalog exposes them as database."schema.table". SQLMesh needs a mapping to render these sources for reads and materialization.
How
Add datalake_catalog_mapping to the ClickHouse connection configuration. For example, {lake: iceberg} renders lake.analytics.events as iceberg."analytics.events". The mapping defaults to empty and applies to parsed query sources. Raw SQL strings and INSERT targets remain unchanged.
Use source tables and query scopes to distinguish catalog-qualified columns from nested fields such as t.payload.user.id, including aliases that share catalog names, CTEs, and correlated queries. Map parsed source queries in DELETE predicates while preserving the DELETE target, nested-field alias precedence and existing virtual-catalog stripping.
Direct reads preserve unmapped catalogs. Materialization rejects unknown source catalogs when a mapping or injected virtual catalog is active. The existing cross-catalog view restriction remains. Document metadata lookup and external-model nesting limitations, with the physical ClickHouse name as a workaround.
Include a dedicated ClickHouse, Iceberg REST, and MinIO Docker CI fixture, with nested-Tuple materialization regressions.
Test Plan
make style passed all four hooks on this revision.
All 126 ClickHouse unit cases passed, including DELETE subquery mapping, target preservation, nested/UNION queries, alias precedence, AST immutability and raw SQL pass-through.
The DELETE source regression failed on the previous PR code and passed after the fix. Earlier nested-field regressions also failed on their pre-fix code.
make fast-test passed all six phases: 2,953 passed and 13 skipped, with four xdist workers.
Prior make doc-test passed: 29 tests. Documentation is unchanged by this follow-up.
Dedicated DataLake Docker CI passed all 21 cases on 6b0fdb6a6, including the three nested-Tuple inserts: job.
Complete GitHub CI on the new DELETE-fix commit, including the DataLake Docker suite.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
ClickHouse connections can map source catalogs to DataLakeCatalog databases, allowing supported queries and materializations to use mapped sources.
Catalog-qualified sources that cannot be resolved under a configured mapping are rejected during applicable materialization operations.
Documentation
Added guidance on configuring catalog mappings, supported operations, and limitations.
Might be worth implementing: Document metadata limitations. Metadata calls (columns(), table_exists, create_external_models) don't apply the mapping. Also, a ClickHouse-only project can't declare a mapped source as an external model with columns, because loading fails with must match the schema's nesting level. Users of this feature will hit both right away.

Walkthrough
ClickHouse connections now support DataLake catalog mappings. The adapter rewrites mapped parsed-query references, and Docker-backed integration tests cover reads, materializations, virtual catalogs, and catalog validation.

Summary
Configure and apply catalog mappings sqlmesh/core/config/connection.py, sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/clickhouse.py, tests/core/engine_adapter/test_clickhouse.py, docs/integrations/engines/clickhouse.md
The ClickHouse connection config validates and forwards datalake_catalog_mapping. The adapter maps parsed query references, handles virtual catalogs and nested-field references, and raises errors for invalid write-source catalogs. Unit tests and documentation cover these behaviors and limitations.
Seed and test the DataLake integration tests/core/engine_adapter/integration/docker/clickhouse-datalake/*, tests/core/engine_adapter/integration/docker/compose.clickhouse-datalake.yaml, tests/core/engine_adapter/integration/test_integration_clickhouse_datalake.py, Makefile, .github/workflows/pr.yaml, pyproject.toml
A Docker Compose fixture seeds Iceberg data backed by MinIO and runs ClickHouse DataLake integration tests. Make targets and CI run the tests and tear down the stack. The tests cover mapped reads, materializations, views, virtual catalogs, and error cases.
SQLMesh/sqlmesh issue 5960 — The issue reports injected virtual catalogs in physical-table source queries for CTAS and INSERT. This PR changes virtual-catalog handling in those query paths.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5e5c8
No actionable issue remains in the reviewed change; it is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6b0fd
The mapping changes which database supplies query data without mapping write targets or supplying new credentials. The integration services use isolated fixture credentials and limited network exposure. No material security regression was established, but production permissions and database-level failure recovery remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new data path resolves model/query-authored catalog names through connection-configured database mappings and executes using the existing ClickHouse connection. Downstream storage exposure depends on the selected DataLakeCatalog database's credentials and grants. Production tenant, database and storage permission scope was not supplied, so maximum data exposure cannot be established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Mapping keys and values reject blank or dotted identifiers; database and combined schema-table names are constructed as SQL identifiers. The existing injected-virtual-catalog restriction on view sources runs before source mapping, and tests assert that a mapped foreign source does not bypass it.
inferred — Catalog validation is a rendering/materialization contract, not a comprehensive authorization boundary: direct reads preserve unknown catalogs and raw SQL bypasses expression rewriting. Database and storage permissions must remain the controls for access isolation.
