Summary

  • Polish the bilingual NASA Space Apps Challenge 2026 participant page at /en/space-apps-2026/ and /ca/space-apps-2026/.
  • Position Siderust as an independent open-source astronomy / orbital-mechanics resource (Rust + Python) for CLPS Lunar Mission Browser and Space Mission Design Game — without implying NASA endorsement.
  • Add scientifically honest lunar-geometry education (3-step Alt/Az pipeline) and clearly document that lunar-surface Alt/Az is not yet a first-class public API.
  • Original fixed-epoch samples were verified against siderust 0.15.1 / PyPI siderust 0.6.0; the Earth Alt/Az beginner samples now use custom observing sites, with Rust demonstrating UTC-now → TT/MJD. These revised examples still require a fresh compile/run validation:
    • Earth Sun Alt/Az (Rust + Python) — custom coordinates; current TT epoch in Rust, fixed TT epoch in Python
    • Selenocentric Sun/Earth ranges (Rust)
    • Geocentric Moon range + Earth–Mars separation (Python)
    • Mars geocentric range (Rust)
  • Original lunar-geometry SVG (no NASA insignia / Space Apps logo, pending clear third-party usage rights).
  • Homepage banner + footer link, SEO/OG metadata, sitemap update, refreshed generated/projects.generated.json.
  • Ready-to-forward Local Lead emails (EN + ES) in outreach/space-apps-2026-email.md.
  • Desktop/mobile screenshots in outreach/screenshots/.

Release-targeted update (required before merging)

The outreach page should ultimately describe the released Siderust v0.16.0 and the corresponding published siderust-py version, including first-class selenographic observer → local lunar Alt/Az examples in both languages. This is not complete yet: currently published versions remain Rust 0.15.1 and Python 0.6.0, and the upstream lunar-site implementation/bindings remain tracked in siderust#121 and siderust-py#17. Do not merge/deploy the page with claims that v0.16.0 or the Python feature are already published unless both release artifacts and runnable snippets have been verified. Replace the legacy limitations, examples and VERSIONS together; don't guess the Python version or unreleased API names.

Upstream follow-up (not in this PR)

Full selenographic site → local ENU → geometric Alt/Az for Sun/Earth belongs in siderust / siderust-py, with scientific tests. See notes in outreach/space-apps-2026-email.md.

Test plan

  • npm ci && npm run build (astro check + i18n/projects/packages validation + static build)
  • Routes: /en/space-apps-2026/, /ca/space-apps-2026/
  • Rebuild and compile/run revised Rust examples against a fresh lockfile
  • Run revised Python examples in a clean environment
  • Hero SVG loads (fixed invalid XML middle-dot)
  • Refresh light/dark and responsive screenshots after final copy changes
  • Review independence disclaimer and scientific limitation wording before outreach
  • After merge/deploy, share https://siderust.org/en/space-apps-2026

Screenshots

Desktop and mobile hero captures are attached under outreach/screenshots/.

Expand the bilingual participant page with verified Rust/Python examples,
honest lunar Alt/Az limitations, original lunar-geometry artwork, SEO,
outreach email text, and refreshed crate metadata so CI validation passes.

Follow-up for the v0.16.0 / selenographic release landing page

The beginner-first examples have now been updated on this PR branch (custom Earth site in Rust/Python, UTC-now → TT/MJD in Rust Earth Alt/Az, UTC-now → TT/JD in Rust Moon-centre geometry, and removal of stale fixed numerical outputs). These edits are preparatory, not yet proof of v0.16.0 compatibility.

Before this PR merges, finish the page as a post-release guide, using the actual published Rust siderust 0.16.0 and the released siderust-py version (read its tag/PyPI metadata; do not assume the Python version number):

  1. Use real, stable selenographic APIs. Replace the introductory Moon-centre-only examples with real Rust and Python lunar-site Sun and Earth geometric Alt/Az examples. Inspect the landed public APIs in Siderust/siderust and Siderust/siderust-py first. Do not invent Selenographic, LunarObserver constructors or method signatures.
  2. Make the snippets suitable for first-time users. A short cargo add/install command, straightforward imports, an explicit custom latitude/longitude/height for the site, epoch from the current UTC instant (chrono::Utc::now() → tempoch UTC→TT→JD in Rust), one call for Sun/Earth Alt/Az, and 2–3 self-explanatory printed results. Python can use a similarly approachable documented epoch-conversion API; avoid passing raw UTC MJD floats to methods expecting TT. Keep unit/frame types explicit in Rust but hide unnecessary machinery.
  3. Document scientific semantics beside the result: selenographic east-positive longitude and latitude convention (as implemented), Moon-fixed frame/principal axes, local vertical/ENU definition, azimuth zero North increasing East, epoch/time scale, geometric altitude rather than terrain-occulted elevation. Include orientation/model accuracy caveats where meaningful; don't reuse Earth ECEF/Horizontal for lunar observers.
  4. Update bilingual English/Catalan page copy (src/lib/space-apps-2026/copy.ts), examples.ts, space-apps-2026.astro, installation/docs/release links, project version metadata, and EN/ES outreach email. Remove the obsolete 'lunar Alt/Az is not available' warning, the Python no-selenocentric placeholder, legacy source-version notes and upstream follow-up language only when the APIs demonstrably exist. Keep the independent/NASA non-endorsement notice.
  5. Verify before deployment: compile/rerun every Rust sample using siderust 0.16.0 and fresh dependency versions; execute Python snippets in a clean environment using the published Python distribution; compare at least one fixed-epoch numerical case with upstream scientific tests; run npm ci && npm run build, exercise both locale routes, and refresh desktop/mobile screenshots and PR checklist. Current-date outputs are intentionally not constant; do not print hard-coded 'expected' Alt/Az for now().

Merge gate: Both packages and their user-facing selenographic APIs need to be published/accessible. As of review on 2026-10-27, the latest confirmed GitHub releases are Rust v0.15.1 and siderust-py v0.6.0, and related feature issues are siderust#121 / siderust-py#17. The website must not publicly claim v0.16.0 is available before publication.
