… a busy RPC port

On macOS, launchd refuses to bootstrap an agent that was disabled, which stopping the node leaves behind, so the install stopped with 'Bootstrap failed: 5'. The installer now runs launchctl enable before launchctl bootstrap for the node and the update agents; if bootstrap still fails, the error says what launchctl print-disabled lists for the agent and how to enable it.

Before anything is downloaded or written, the installer checks whether another program listens on 127.0.0.1 at the node's HTTP RPC port (nc, else lsof, else a curl connection) and stops with nothing installed if so. The installed node itself holding the port, recognised by its eth_coinbase matching the config's Etherbase, passes, so updates and re-runs of a running node are not refused.
