Replaces astral-sh/setup-uv with jdx/mise-action in every workflow that installs uv. CI now runs the uv version in mise.lock, which is the version that local development uses. This replaces the version: latest-known approach from STF-1497.
install_args installs only uv, not the other tools in mise.toml.
The dev group and CI use tox-uv-bare in place of tox-uv. tox-uv installs its own uv from PyPI. tox-uv-bare uses the uv on PATH, so tox also runs the mise uv. CI runs tox with uvx.
CLAUDE.md now says to install uv with mise install uv.
The release workflow sets cache: false. zizmor's cache-poisoning audit flags mise-action when its cache is on, as it did for setup-uv.
The first commit updates uv in mise.lock from 0.11.29 to 0.13.7. Without it, CI would drop to uv 0.11.29.
Updated release and test workflows to install uv through the same toolchain manager. The test workflow now runs the test suite using uvx with Python 3.13.
Updated development setup instructions and tooling to use the uv version specified in the project configuration.

Use the latest known uv version in CI
Install uv with mise in CI
Nov 5, 2026
Replace astral-sh/setup-uv with jdx/mise-action. CI now runs the uv
version in mise.lock, which is the version that local development uses.
The release workflow disables the mise cache, as it did for the
setup-uv cache (zizmor cache-poisoning).
Dependabot does not update mise.lock. To update uv, run
`mise upgrade uv` and commit mise.lock.

tox-uv brings its own uv from PyPI, so tox creates and syncs the test environments with that uv, not with the uv 0.13.7 in mise.lock. The PR says 'CI now runs the uv version in mise.lock', which is not true for the test runs.
tox-uv 1.37.5 requires uv>=0.13.4,<1. Its code calls from uv import find_uv_bin and uses the uv from that package unless TOX_UV_PATH is set. uv tool install tox --with tox-uv gets the newest uv from PyPI at job time, with no lock and no cooldown. So tox run uses the newest PyPI uv in CI and uv 0.13.4 from uv.lock locally (uv run tox in dev-bin/release.sh). The mise uv (0.13.7) runs only uv tool install and uv python install. There are three different uv versions. Fix: use --with tox-uv-bare, which uses the uv on PATH, or set TOX_UV_PATH=uv.

From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in 06b6339. The dev group and CI now use tox-uv-bare in place of tox-uv, so tox uses the uv on PATH, which is the mise uv. uv.lock no longer has the uv package from PyPI.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The release build now runs a mise binary that is not pinned. mise-action has no version or sha256 input, so it downloads the newest mise release that is more than 24 hours old.
Each release run can get a different mise binary. That binary runs on the job that builds the sdist and wheel for PyPI. The mise-action pin by commit SHA does not pin mise itself. mise-action does check the download against the mise maintainer's signed checksums, but the version still floats. Fix: set version: and sha256: on the release step.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The test jobs no longer cache uv's package downloads. Each of the 20 matrix jobs downloads all wheels from PyPI again. mise-action caches only the mise directory, which holds about 20 MB of uv binary.
setup-uv cached the uv cache directory by default, keyed on uv.lock. With mise-action, every OS and Python job downloads the same pinned dependencies again. This makes CI slower and adds PyPI traffic for no gain. Fix: add an actions/cache step for the path that uv cache dir prints, keyed on uv.lock.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The new comment is not accurate. It says 'Windows runners need it', but the PATH line runs on every OS. It also compares to setup-uv, which the workflow no longer uses.
A maintainer who trusts the comment can limit the line to Windows or remove it. tox is then not on PATH on any runner image that does not already include ~/.local/bin. The setup-uv comparison describes an old setup and will not help a future reader. Fix: state the actual reason: tox run in later steps needs the uv tool bin directory on PATH.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in d3ea2d2. The comment is gone, together with the GITHUB_PATH line it explained. The test step now runs tox with uvx.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The tox install step now needs a forced bash shell, an extra command that writes to GITHUB_PATH, and a comment, only so that a later step can find tox. A single uvx call in the test step does the same job.
The extra lines exist only to put tox on PATH. uvx --python-preference only-managed --python 3.13 --with tox-uv --with tox-gh tox run --skip-missing-interpreters false (or --with tox-uv-bare, see the tox-uv comment) removes the install step, the shell: bash override, the GITHUB_PATH write and the comment, and works the same on all four OSes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in d3ea2d2. The test step now runs tox with uvx. The "Install tox" step, the shell: bash override and the GITHUB_PATH write are gone.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Removing setup-uv also removes its Python problem matcher. setup-uv v10.3.2 has add-problem-matchers: true by default and registers a python.json matcher, which turns Python tracebacks into GitHub annotations. mise-action does not register a matcher.
A pytest failure or traceback in the test jobs no longer shows as an annotation on the PR's changed lines or in the run summary. Reviewers must open the raw log to find the file and line that failed.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Not adding a problem matcher. setup-uv's python.json matcher matches only a File "...", line N line directly followed by a raise Foo('...') line. pytest's default failure output does not have that shape, so the matcher rarely made annotations for these test jobs.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The step writes the uv tool bin directory (~/.local/bin on Linux and macOS) to GITHUB_PATH after mise-action adds its uv install directory. GITHUB_PATH entries are prepended, so ~/.local/bin comes first in PATH for later steps, on every OS, not only Windows.
If a runner image or an earlier step puts a uv in ~/.local/bin (the location the astral install script uses), the 'Install Python' step runs that uv and not the one from mise.lock, and no error appears. Write the tool bin directory only on Windows (if: runner.os == 'Windows'), or call tox without a PATH change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in d3ea2d2. The workflow no longer writes to GITHUB_PATH, because the test step runs tox with uvx. The mise uv stays first on PATH.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Removing setup-uv also drops its Windows directory defaults. On Windows, setup-uv v10.3.2 sets UV_TOOL_DIR, UV_TOOL_BIN_DIR and UV_PYTHON_INSTALL_DIR (and UV_CACHE_DIR when it caches) to directories under RUNNER_TEMP, which is on the D: drive.
Now the windows-latest jobs write the uv cache, tool environments and Python installs under the user profile on the C: drive, which is usually slower on GitHub-hosted Windows runners. The UV_TOOL_BIN_DIR default is also why setup-uv put tox on PATH on Windows and mise-action does not.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Not setting these directories. The Windows jobs on this PR are not slower than on main: on average, 129s on main and 106s on this PR. The tox PATH problem is fixed separately, because the test step now runs tox with uvx (d3ea2d2).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This comment is about the uv install instructions in CLAUDE.md (lines 371-372), which are outside the diff. The PR says CI now runs the uv version that local development uses, but CLAUDE.md still tells developers to install the newest uv with the astral install script. Nothing points them to mise.
A developer who follows CLAUDE.md gets the newest uv in ~/.local/bin, not the 0.13.7 that CI uses. CI and local results can differ, which is the problem the PR sets out to fix.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
From Claude (Claude Opus 5.5), on Greg's behalf: Fixed in e5770d5. CLAUDE.md now says to run mise install uv, which installs the uv version in mise.lock that CI uses.
tox-uv depends on the uv package from PyPI, and tox then uses that
bundled uv. In CI, this was the newest uv on PyPI, not the uv in
mise.lock. Locally, it was the uv in uv.lock.
tox-uv-bare does not bundle uv. It uses the uv on PATH, which is the
mise-installed uv in CI.

uvx runs tox without installing it as a uv tool. The workflow no longer
needs to add the uv tool bin directory to PATH or force bash on
Windows.

The step installs mise, and mise.toml sets the uv version. The new
name tells a reader where to change the uv version.
