Problem

Every nightly release repeats the whole [Unreleased] section of CHANGELOG.md. That section is never cut, so each release shows every change ever made: about 12,000 characters, identical across releases built from the same commit.

Change

.github/scripts/release_changelog.sh writes the notes for one release:

  • the CHANGELOG.md lines added since the previous nightly tag, under their own headings
  • the commit subjects, when the changelog did not change
  • a line saying the source is the same, when there are no new commits

The release job now checks out with fetch-depth: 0, because it needs the earlier tags.

Testing

Run locally against real tags:

Tag Before After
2026-10-31 ~12,100 chars 876 chars: the VE Analyze fix
2026-11-01 ~12,100 chars No changes: same source as 2026-10-31.

Also checked: a rerun of the same tag, a tag with no earlier tag, and a release with commits but no changelog entry.

The workflow itself has not run yet. The first scheduled nightly after merge is the real test.

Each release repeated the whole [Unreleased] section of CHANGELOG.md, which is
never cut, so every one showed every change ever made: about 12000 characters,
identical across releases built from the same commit.

The notes now hold the CHANGELOG lines added since the previous nightly tag,
under their own headings, or the commits when the changelog did not change, or
a line saying the source is the same.
